Cross-linguistic gender congruency effects during lexical access in novice L2 learners: evidence from ERPs

نویسندگان

چکیده

Herein we present electrophysiological evidence of extremely rapid learning new labels in a second language (L2) for existing concepts, via computerized games. However, the effect was largely constrained by crosslinguistic grammatical gender congruency. We recorded ERPs both prior to exposure with L2 and following 4-day training session. Prior exposure, no modulation N400 component found as function correct Match vs. Mismatch audio presentation words their associated images. Post-training, large emerged compared trials, but only trials on which shared learners' L1. Behavioral results showed that all were learned equally well, independent congruency across L1 L2. The demonstrate influences lexical activation during initial stages establishing lexicon.

Systemic Drift of L1 Vowels in Novice L2 Learners

Studies of proficient second-language (L2) learners have often noted phonetic drift of their native language (L1) vis-à-vis monolingual norms. Such drift has been attributed to perceptual linkage between similar sounds in L1 and L2. This study provides evidence that L1 phonetic drift is limited neither to advanced L2 learners, nor to crosslanguage influence at a segmental level. During the firs...

Vocabulary teaching strategies and conceptual representations of words in L2 in children: evidence with novice learners.

A controversial issue in bilingual research is whether in the early stages of L2 learning, access to the conceptual system involves mediation of L1 lexical representations [Kroll, J. Cross–linguistic Comparison of Refusal Speech Act: Evidence from Trilingual EFL Learners in English, Farsi, and Kurdish

To date, little research on pragmatic transfer has considered a multilingual situation where there is an interaction among three different languages spoken by one person. Of interest was whether pragmatic transfer of refusals among three languages spoken by the same person occurs from L1 and L2 to L3, L1 to L2 and then to L3 or from L1 and L1 (if there are more than one L1) to L2. This study ai...

Effects of Communicative Pressures on Novice L2 Learners' Use of Optional Formal Devices

We conducted an Artificial Language Learning experiment to examine the production behavior of language learners in a dynamic communicative setting. Participants were exposed to a miniature language with two optional formal devices and were then asked to use the acquired language to transfer information in a cooperative game. The results showed that language learners optimize their use of the op...

Cross Linguistic Transfer in Word Order: Evidence from L1 Forgetting and L2 Acquisition

The purpose of the present study was to bring together the evidence on possible cross-linguistic transfer in word order from two different perspectives: a transfer as an apparent obstacle in second language acquisition, and a transfer as a cause of attrition of the native language. The relationship between the same two languages in a contact situation was investigated. Since the majority of stu...
